Fabián Tacuri is an Ecuadorian visual artist born in Gualaceo, in the province of Azuay, on May 1st, 1971. This Andean city is the birthplace of artists, musicians, and artisans. It was within this cultural environment and the rural surroundings of the majestic province that inspired the conceptual formation of the artist in his early years. It was his mother, Doña Mercedes Tacuri, who nurtured the artist’s artistic vocation. Fabián Tacuri inherits from his father, a renowned Ecuadorian artist, the ability to express the artist’s emotions on canvas.

Fabián was a natural artist, a self-taught individual who, barely a teenager at 15 years old, had his first exhibition thanks to the provincial commemoration of Azuay recognizing his skill. At 17, he entered the School of Fine Arts of Azuay where he refined and improved his techniques, beginning to make a name for himself nationally. In 1993, filled with dreams and hopes, he migrated to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream. In 1995, his talent and skill were recognized, allowing him to exhibit his work with the co-sponsorship of municipal socio-cultural entities in Brentwood and Suffolk County, New York. This opportunity opened doors for this Ecuadorian artist to introduce his work to the Anglo-Saxon community. Social, cultural, and artistic entities allowed him to make series of presentations in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

The most significant recognition for the artist came when his work, themed on migration titled “Family Separation,” was selected by the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Dr. Rafael Correa Delgado, to be permanently exhibited in the presidential house.

In 2001, a group of Ecuadorian artists decided to associate. On June 25th, 2001, in Long Island, New York, the group “Talento Latino” was formed. The group’s objectives have been the artistic dissemination of their proposal, as well as organizing the community to integrate it into cultural activities. Later, they decided to expand, forming an organization that integrates different Latin American countries, founding a corporation called ProjectingArts.Inc (Projected Art), with the slogan “Projecting Art without Borders,” being a legal entity under non-profit statutes in the state of New York.

The theme of Fabián Tacuri’s work reflects a mysterious quest to capture on canvas the human experience with its fear of life and death, the bitterness of the poor, the sadness of children, and the breakdown of families due to migration to other cities in search of a better future. Perhaps that’s why some of his pen strokes reflect these moods, but there is also joy, faith, and hope. Fabián Tacuri believes that all of us who live outside our countries in Latin America and the Caribbean could cultivate that seed of art and culture that exists in every human being.
